The MoCreebec people live in the two communities of Moosonee and Moose Factory. Numbering just over five-hundred, the membership is organized under its own Constitution. Recognized as a First Nation by other Indigenous people, Nations and other governments, we are active locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The community is represented by the MoCreebec Council of the Cree Nation.

Historically, our people are affiliated with other families that are culturally seen as the "y" dialect of the Cree Nation. In modern times this means communities are considered to be part of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. At the same time, we are affiliated politically with Nishnawbe Aski-Nation. For those unfamiliar with these designations, these Agreements and Treaties confirm relations with both the Canadian federal government and provincial governments of Ontario and Quebec.

In our case, despite these affiliations, our people struggle with having their rights recognized and honoured by Canada, Ontario and Quebec. As a distinct community of people without a federally recognized 'reserve or band status', we continue to pursue a resolution of these matters for the benefit of our people and the future generations.

While our people have been around the Moosonee/Moose Factory area for at least seven generations, our organization has been around since February 1980. Initially, our primary goal has been to organize our community and to respond to the basic needs of our people such as housing (water and sewer) and access to land. Many of our people were living in substandard living conditions unfit for raising young families. Over time, the goals and objectives of the people have evolved to reflect the priorities.

Our people and organization have survived by initiating community economic development projects that build assets for the organization, contribute to the economy and provide employment to the local labour force. We also seek to address the ongoing basic needs such as educational benefits and health care for our people as part of our rights. Wherever resources are made available and we are eligible, we apply as a way of better serving the needs of our people.

MoCreebec Council of the Cree Nation believes in rebuilding the Cree Nation and considers itself as one example and a reflection of our collective struggle and journey to making our Nation strong again. At best, we are a people in transition with the MoCreebec Council of the Cree Nation instituted as a transitional or provisional form of government as we continue the work of Nation building.
