Our modern version of a traditional Cree inspired meal can be enjoyed daily in the Shaapuhtuwaan restaurant. Listed below are some of the items available as our Daily Chalk Board Specials.

Shaapuhtuwaan Restaurant
The Shaapuhtuwaan, literally translates to "long teepee with doors at each end". On a larger scale, the architecture of the restaurant resembles the traditional social space of the Crees. The shaapuhtuwaan was one dwelling structure used as winter lodging for Cree people where multiple families lived together and commonly shared the space for living and socializing. Each family helped in the contribution of food and cooking during the winter months. With this concept in mind, we invite many peoples and cultures to share in this experience with us.

As you stroll through the restaurant and lounge areas, you will notice that the fireplace is constructed of limestone rocks found locally, and if you look closely enough, you can find fossils in the rocks. Footprints in the ceramic tiles portray some of the animals home to this area. They include footprints of the moose, caribou, bear, muskrat and martin.

During the summer and fall seasons, this 66-seat restaurant offers Aboriginal cuisine, traditional food in modern times. A variety of health conditions such as diabetes are on the rise in the community, and as a result, we have chosen a healthier alternative for people dining out.

We continue to honour the tradition of the shaapuhtuwaan with the setting, the food and the hospitality provided to you by our team. Menu items have been selected to pay tribute to the traditions of Cree people. In promoting natural foods, we are only beginning to research and incorporate natural indigenous foods within our Aboriginal cuisine menu, while we support other Indigenous communities in their sustainable food productions, such as offering wild rice from time to time. Currently, we offer pure maple syrup, free-range bison from Ontario, and caribou from Nunavut. We grow organic vegetables and herbs in our small garden and we hope to start a much larger growing area and greenhouse into the future.

Upon request, we offer vegetarian dishes. For those with allergies, please inform us with details prior to your arrival, so that we can accommodate your menu!

Like every restaurant, we serve one of the largest trade commodities in the world - coffee. Our coffee is organically grown and is fair-trade coffee. We purchase from social-responsible businesses working as partners with Indigenous peoples through coffee cooperatives. This coffee is without chemicals from its growth to harvesting production. Through selling their coffee at a fair price, these worker cooperatives are able to support their communities and the well-being of their families by affording and building their own community development programs, healthcare clinics and schools. Fair trade is not charity, it is working with cooperatives who set their price to compete fairly in the world market. We appreciate this product and gladly support these efforts!
