Cree Village Ecolodge is in Moose Factory, Ontario, an island community
located between the shores of the Moose River 10 to 12 miles from where
the Moose River meets the ocean water of James Bay.
The island is three miles long by two miles wide. Moosonee is located
1.5 miles across the river from Moose Factory on the mainland. To the
south are the two closest major centres, Timmins and Cochrane. Moosonee
has a railway line connecting it to Cochrane and an airport with regular
scheduled flights to Timmins.
Air Creebec is currently providing air service to Timmins where connecting flights can be made to points further south. The flight from Timmins to Moosonee takes about an hour.
Ontario Northland provides the rail service to Moosonee. The trip from
Cochrane to Moosonee in winter takes five hours. In summer, it's only
four hours.
Travel from Moosonee to Moose Factory island varies depending upon the
season. In late spring, summer and early fall the river is ice free and
water taxis use freighter canoes between the two communities. Private
taxis currently cost $8.00 each way. The water taxis can be found at the
public docks on the Moosonee side and will drop you off at the dock at
Cree Village Ecolodge. A barge also plies the open water season and is
available to transport large items between the communities.
During the freeze-up and break-up periods of early spring and late fall,
the only means of transport is by helicopter at a cost of about $35 each
way.
In winter, once the ice has solidly formed on the Moose River the Public
Works department prepares the ice road for winter travel. Taxis and trucks
travel back and forth across the river all winter.
