Cree Village is about people - those who visit us, members of the community and the staff who make it the friendly and welcoming place it is. The people featured here are just a small sample of the staff at the Cree Village EcoLodge.

Jimmy Small - Elder and guide
I've been going out in the bush for more than 50 years. I have a camp on Big Stone Island out in James Bay, and a river camp about 125 kilometers to the east.

When I was 16, I got out of residential school and joined my family in the bush camp. We slept on beds of fresh spruce boughs, and the floor of the camp was covered in boughs too. In the morning sometimes my blankets would be covered in frost, but we’d start a fire, cook breakfast and be warmed up for the day’s work. In the bush we were a very close family, depending on each other. We ate game, moose, beaver, partridge and fish. Winter was good time because you could move around better and go anywhere with snowshoes.

Over the years I’ve taken a lot of visitors out to camps, or on the rivers and out on James Bay where you can taste the salt water and see whales and seals. It takes knowledge of the land to get around. Out on the Bay you won’t even know where you came from much less how to get back with out some experience and knowing what to look for.
